Zuyd University of Applied Sciences-Heerlen

The Romans settled the area around Heerlen in 120 AD.  An important trading post known as Coriovallum, the baths served as a social meeting place until about 400 AD.  Following a 37-year excavation of the site, the Thermen Museum opened to allow the public to visit the restored Roman ruins.  During the Middle Ages, the lords of Aare gained control of the area; the 12th century Schelmentoren is still a part of the old city walls.  With the Industrial Revolution, the Heerlen area became important for coal mining, which continued until the 1970s.
