Rovaniemi is situated in the center of Lapland on the Arctic Circle at the confluence of two rivers.  The city was settled in the 1100s and is now an important tourist center with emphasis year-round on Santa Claus Village, regional arts and crafts, outdoor activities, and skiing.  Tourism is the most important industry, but technology, such as snowmobile manufacturing and information technology, is also an important industry. The culture of the traditional Sami people is a source of great pride.  Periods of perpetual daylight and twilight are experienced in Rovaniemi, as well as the northern lights.
